Dust Devil 2011 was an important tournament for many teams, including the Angel City Derby Girls’ All-Stars, the Hollywood Scarlets. The Scarlets made a plan to not only show up, but to put up a good showing at this years’ tournament against teams from all over the US in attempt to carve out their spot to place at the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association 2011 Western Regional Tournament.
And show, they did! The Scarlets started off the tournament by defeating Arizona Roller Derby 210-88, making a very distinct statement that they had come to WIN!
After this round, ACDG moved on to play the Carolina Roller Girls, seeded #7 in the Eastern region, and a very, very tough team. The girls fought incredibly hard against the highly ranked squad, but weren’t able to defeat them. CRG took the game with a score of 155-49. Carolina went on to win the entire tournament!
The loss to Carolina placed the Scarlets in position to fight for the 3rd place spot at the tournament against the Silicon Valley Roller Girls’ All-stars, the Dot.Kamikazes. Our girls started off slowly but built momentum to take a 30 point lead at the half, and after an incredibly close back-and-forth 2nd half with a couple of lead changes, the girls pulled out a win against SVRG with a final score of 143-118, sealing their spot as 3rd place at the tournament.
This win will surely be instrumental in carving out the Scarlets’ path to Western Regionals, and also ensures that the rematch against SVRG (@SVRG) on June 11 will be a TOUGH and important game!
Well done, Scarlets! POP POP!
