Angel of the Month, October – Phoenix!

Phoenix skating

1. (in classical mythology) a unique bird that lived for five or six centuries in the Arabian desert, after this time burning itself on a funeral pyre and rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.

2. a person or thing regarded as uniquely remarkable in some respect.

Uniquely remarkable is the perfect way to describe Angel City’s October Angel of the Month, Phoenix! Authentic and humble, what’s even more endearing is that our beloved Phoenix didn’t take the namesake of the majestic mythological creature that befits her so well. Hilariously and just as fitting, she was named after her scruffy, spunky rescue puppy!

Celebrating her 3 year ACD anniversary this month, Phoenix joined Angel City in October 2014 from Sacred City Roller Derby. Pulling double duty as both a skater and coach, she flawlessly leads the Shore Shots on and off the track. Her dedication to her team and league knows no bounds as she commuted for months from San Francisco to continue to coach and train her Shots.

Phoenix coaching

Skater and coach are only two of the many hats Phoenix wears. She truly serves our league and the roller derby community as a whole as an Angel City representative for the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), a Tournament Sanction Processor (WFTDA) and a Member Advocate for ACD.

And that’s not all. Somehow between all of these responsibilities, she works with our merchandise team, helping to create and manage our awesome league merch. Oh, and we cannot forget that Phoenix is ALSO a member of our training team, coming up with grueling workouts to torture, um we mean challenge, our membership!

An avid sports fan, Phoenix often infuses her coaching with analogies and examples from all sports; to the pure joy and confusion of her team! Her love of sports is only rivaled by her love of animals and her puppies, Fenway and Phoenix!

Don’t miss Phoenix take the track with her team, the Shore Shots, on October 14 at Angel City Headquarters.
