Maria! I just met a girl named Maria! October’s Angel of the Month has been a leading lady in our hearts for years and we are excited to sing her name from the roof. Angel City Derby is proud to celebrate our very own “Westside Story”, Maria Escobar!
Have you been handed a flyer around town? If so, you’ve probably met Maria. Did you need help taking your first roll on quad skates? You know Maria. Parenting a new Junior skater? Yes, that’s Maria! Maria has often been the first face any new skater sees when starting off at Angel City Derby. Maria has been instrumental in helping develop and co-lead Mob Squad; our community outreach and publicity committee responsible for passing out flyers and talking to the community about ACD derby. Maria almost singlehandedly ran the New Recruits sessions at Moonlight Roller Rink, teaching people to skate and basic derby skills.
Home grown at Angel City, Maria started her derby career in February of 2012 and has skated as a member of the Rising Stars. Her passion for teaching and nurturing teammates translated to her role as an integral leader for ACD’s New Recruits program. Maria helped with flyering events for recruitment and managed practices and trainings for New Recruits at Moonlight all with the most welcoming smile. She’s is an incredibly sweet, patient and caring coach who has been so charitable with her time in helping our league flourish.
Maria is also true trailblazer, bringing the concept of the new recruits program to ACJD as a way to open up the playing field for new Junior skaters to learn about derby and get their feet in the game. Maria’s extraordinary contribution to ACJD was instrumental to the growth of the program and we are utterly grateful for her initiative and direction.
It’s safe to say that without Maria, ACD would truly not be what it is today. So many of our skaters can say they were first introduced to derby by Maria and for that, we are forever grateful. Your dedication to spreading your love for derby to the masses is profound and we are so lucky to have you.
