Angel of the Month May – Oliver DePlace

Oliver DePlace transferred to ACDG’s Parks and Refs in August of 2013. His skating skills made him a great addition to our officials crew. He has great strength as an Outside Pack Ref (OPR) and Jam Ref (JR) and is working on building his strength as a pack ref. He earned his WFTDA Level 2 Certification in August 2014, a challenging feat to overcome for any roller derby referee.

In April 2015, he worked his first Crew Head Ref position at the annual Battle For The Coast tournament in Ventura, CA and excelled as a crew leader. Despite always being caught napping, Oliver only misses practice when the U.S. Marines hold him hostage. He is being shipped off to Japan for a few months. We know that he will continue to grow as an official and he has already reached out to a local league in Japan where his skills will undoubtedly be valued. We will miss him in his absence and look forward to his return!

Oliver is a tremendous human being and a great referee. Parks and Refs will miss him, I’m sure. Semper Fi, Marine. Be safe, and come back. Hella Parks and Refs will miss you, too!!!

I’ve worked with Oliver a few times over the last couple of years. He is a gracious and genuinely kind person, and an amazing skating ref. If you have ever seen him skate, its beautiful. He makes it look easy and effortless. His napping skills are top notch, and we could all learn from him. If I were ever to spoon anybody ever again, it would be him…unsuspectingly, while he naps…somewhere.

Good luck in your deployment! Enjoy all the wonders of Japan. They are lucky to have you, even if for a short while. See you soon!
